Make a list. Check it twice. And if you have TiVO, do so. This is going to be a movie fan's Super Bowl Weekend!
UPDATE: Well, what a Super Bowl, huh?! It took me a week to get my head together to fix everything!
Okay - everything that appears under "Unknown yet" never happened. EVER.
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen particularly struck me - almost like the Cloverfield trailer (or should I save that for Star Trek?) because it did not reveal too much of the plot other than Sam Witwicky's in deep mondo trouble. And that Optimus ain't the biggest Transfomer out there.
Star Trek added some nice new footage for its spot. I particularly enjoyed seeing McCoy and Kirk meet for the first time and remembered that this is where McCoy says, "Space is disease and danger wrapped in darkness and silence." (Wow, McCoy! When did you ever become such an optimist?!) I also enjoyed seeing the heroes in freefall and somebody going "woohoohoo"! I'm pretty sure that will make the KCA commercial if it appears.
I was surprised that G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra made it first. Dennis Quaid was pretty cool, but I wanted to see Brendan Fraser! Plus there was no "Yo, Joe!" or "Knowing is half the battle"?!
I do not like Ron Howard's The Da Vinci Code or Angels and Demons so I will skip this. (How on Earth did they get Ewan McGregor?!)
Now, I was expecting Monsters vs. Aliens 3D to be a true crowd-pleaser. It blew my mind! But most of the people I talked to were "ho-hum". That Chuck 3D wasn't any good but it reminded of the show I used to watch with a passion.
Land of the Lost came out of nowhere for me. Especially with Matt Lauer (in the Today show set) interviewing Will Ferrell in full-on character as Rick Marshall. If you see the full trailer he goes on to say, "You can look for his book in the 'I'm out of my freakin' mind department'." Think of how Tom Cruise would've reacted if Lauer said that to him! I did enjoy the taglines "They thought he was crazy. They were wrong." and "Universal Studios invites you to get lost". At the end, of course, is a hilarious reference to Jurassic Park.
Fast and Furious looks interesting but they didn't have a lot of new footage.
Race to Witch Mountain had one more joke in addition to its "What does an alien look like?" routine. In perhaps a nod to Indiana Jones and the Kingdom Skull's failed "nuke the fridge" gag, Jack Bruno (Dwayne Johnson) says to himself, "Don't go in the pimped-out fridge, Jack."
Up had one added scene after its spot with Russell going on about his GPS and saying how they'll never get lost and it promptly falls out the window.
There they are - look up again either on TiVO or on the Internet where Alec Baldwin will eat your brains (Hulu commercial). Evil Alec Baldwin, I knew it.

News on 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA: CAPTAIN NEMO
Of course, everybody remembers the 1954 Disney film - 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea based on Jules Verne's classic novel. I never saw the movie, never read the book (I've heard of passages from Back to the Future Part III). Speaking of Back to the Future Part III, at the beginning of the movie, 1955 Doc Brown is shocked to see 1985 Marty McFly and slips on the hoverboard from 2015 and catches himself on the pipe organ, its haunting noise making Marty seem like a ghost. That pipe organ? - it's from the 1954 20,000 Leagues. It was borrowed from the "Haunted Mansion" and soon returned -- Anyway, back to the news:

The project was thrown into disarray in October when John Singleton quit the project.
But Carnahan is determined to breathe new life into the movie, about four Vietnam veterans who are wrongly convicted of armed robbery and escape military prison to become mercenary 'do-gooders'.
The Smokin' Aces director reveals his vision to Daily Variety: 'This was a coveted property, and re-imagining a show that I remembered as a kid was tough to turn down.
'Fox (Studios) hired me to make it as emotional, real and accessible as possible without cheesing it up.
'You can make a film that reflects on the real world without losing the sense of fun, and the velocity of action in a classic summer popcorn film. Having Ridley and Tony on board lends considerable weight to that and classes up the whole project.'"

Paramount Pictures and Sony Pictures Entertainment have announced the start of principal production in Los Angeles on the 3D Motion Capture Film The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Jamie Bell (Billy Elliott, Defiance) as Tintin, the intrepid young reporter whose relentless pursuit of a good story thrusts him into a world of high adventure, and Daniel Craig (Quantum of Solace, Defiance) as the nefarious Red Rackham.
Bell and Craig are joined by an international cast that includes Andy Serkis, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Gad Elmaleh, Toby Jones and Mackenzie Crook.
The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn from a screenplay by Steven Moffat, Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish, is produced by Spielberg, Peter Jackson and Kathleen Kennedy, is the first in the series of 3D motion capture films based on the iconic character created by Georges Remi, better known to the world by his pen name "Herge" and is due for release in 2011. Over 200 million copies have been sold worldwide. The popular series has been translated into 70 languages and still attracts thousands of new fans each year.
Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson will bring Herge's stories to life employing state-of-the-art performance capture technology developed by Jackson's Weta Digital."
I've done some other research and found that each film can be shot in 30 days. Then, why isn't it coming out sooner? Never thought I'd see the day when Spielberg would direct a movie with the word "Unicorn" in it... by the way, "Unicorn" in the story, is the name of a boat.

Is Seth Rogen's GREEN HORNET Dead?

"Drew McWeeny of the fledgling entertainment site HitFix had been hearing from various unnamed sources at the Sundance Film Festival that Seth Rogen's plan to bring the '50s pulp hero The Green Hornet may have stalled with the departure of Stephen Chow as the film's director, as reported last month.
Drew says: 'Ever since Stephen Chow started to waffle about his participation in the film, I've been hearing rumors that there were major hesitations at Sony. Then at Sundance, I heard several people say that the film was off completely. I spoke this afternoon with a source close to the film, and while they didn't call it completely dead, they did say it is 'highly unlikely' that the film will shoot in 2009 at all.'
Currently, Sony still has The Green Hornet listed on their release schedule for June 25, 2010 giving Rogen plenty of time to find a new director and a new Cato, but if it gets moved or pulled from that great summer release date, we can probably start taking these rumors more seriously."

After years of development and numerous names touted to helm and star in the project, the new incarnation of masked crime-fighter the Green Hornet was unveiled last year, with Rogen attached as lead actor and Stephen Chow signed to direct and star as sidekick Kato.
Hollywood insiders claimed the film would be cancelled after Chow resigned from his role as director, and producers failed to find a replacement.
But Rogen is adamant the project is still going ahead, confirming the adaptation of the Bruce Lee-starring TV series should hit theatres by 2010.
He writes in an email to website HitFix.com: 'The Green Hornet has many people working for it, including production designers, costume designers and many conceptual artists, office staff, etc.
'(The studio heads) have every intention on making it, and assuming we're able to hire a new director in the upcoming weeks, which seems like a distinct possibility, it should still hit the release date.'"

The studio-based Dan Lin, currently producing the upcoming Sherlock Holmes and executive producer on Terminator Salvation, will adapt the classic Hanna-Barbera property as an origin story that reveals how Tom and Jerry first meet and form their rivalry before getting lost in Chicago and reluctantly working together during an arduous journey home.
Warners owns the rights to Hanna-Barbera's slate of popular animated properties and has several of them in development for bigscreen adaptation. Those include Robert Rodriguez's version of The Jetsons and producer Donald De Line's Yogi Bear.
"Tom and Jerry" originated as a series of 114 animated shorts, produced by MGM's toon studio between 1940 and 1960, and won seven Academy Awards. New toons were produced after that."
Not bad, sounds like a CG version of Who Framed Roger Rabbit. This is the way I thought TMNT was going to be.

"Although it's not really news that Spider-Man 4 will start shooting in 2010 as this report at MTV highlights (director Sam Raimi himself said previously that filming would start by March of 2010), it is good to hear that J.K. Simmons will be returning:
The fourth film in the blockbuster 'Spider-Man' franchise will begin shooting in 2010, actor J.K. Simmons told MTV News at Sundance, revealing that he'll continue in the role of Daily Bugle publisher J. Jonah Jameson. 'I saw Sam [Raimi] at his Christmas party.'
The fourth installment is expected to hit theaters in May of 2011. In October of '08, it was announced that playwright David Lindsay-Abaire (upcoming Inkheart) would write the script. James Vanderbilt wrote an earlier draft."
This is great news! I can't wait to hear, "PARKER! GET IN HERE!" on May 2011.
P.S.: I think it's noteworthy to add that Tobey Maguire has also signed up for a Spider-Man 5. What could happen?

Ricardo Montalban has passed...

"Montalban, the Mexican-born actor who became a star in splashy MGM musicals and later as the wish-fulfilling Mr. Roarke in TV's 'Fantasy Island,' died Wednesday morning at his home, a city councilman said. He was 88. Montalban had been a star in Mexican movies when MGM brought him to Hollywood in 1946. He was cast in the leading role opposite Esther Williams in Fiesta. He also starred with the swimming beauty in On an Island with You and Neptune's Daughter.
A later generation knew Montalban as the faintly mysterious, white-suited Mr. Roarke, who presided over an island resort where visitors were able to fulfill their lifelong dreams. 'Fantasy Island' received high ratings for most of its 1978-1984 span on ABC television."
What bothers me is they fail to mention his famous sci-fi role of Khan Noonien Singh in Star Trek: The Original Series and Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan or his famous commericals advertising "Corinthian leather".
He will be missed.

"Variety is reporting the rumor that Emily Blunt is in talks to play Natasha Romanoff in Iron Man II. Romanoff is a Soviet super spy who doubles as Black Widow, a beauty in a skintight black costume that is enhanced by high-tech weaponry.
She would join the previously-announced villains Mickey Rourke and Sam Rockwell in the sequel. Again directed by Jon Favreau, the Marvel Studios film sees the return of Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow, while Don Cheadle is replacing Terrence Howard.
Blunt's credits include The Devil Wears Prada, The Jane Austen Book Club and Charlie Wilson's War. She also stars in The Wolfman, coming to theaters in November.
The Justin Theroux-scripted Iron Man II will begin production this spring for a release by Paramount on May 7, 2010."

I don't know. Maybe I won't be Nick Fury. Maybe somebody else will be Nick Fury or maybe Nick Fury won't be in it. There seems to be an economic crisis in the Marvel Comics world so [they're saying to me], 'We're not making that deal.'' ...Marvel Comics...suggested that they still want to see Jackson wearing the eyepatch. 'Marvel does not comment on active negotiations,' was the boilerplate repsonse, but there was that emphasis on the word active in the voice of the spokesman who phoned me back."
We've had to deal with Warners and Fox fighting like children over a R-rated comic book movie, Watchmen, and now we're having Marvel starting to tick off fanboys (apparently, they've seen the lack of profits for The Spirit). 2009 Movies' TV Spots at the Super Bowl!

"Confirmed for this year's roster are high-profile titles like Paramount's Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Star Trek and G.I. Joe; Sony’s Angels & Demons; DreamWorks Animation's Monsters vs. Aliens; and Universal's Land of the Lost and its fourth installment in The Fast and the Furious franchise. Disney is also planning to use the game to raise the profile for Pixar's next toon, Up, while a X-Men Origins: Wolverine spot is likely from Fox.
As of Thursday, Fox had yet to buy any time during the game. Should it do so at the last minute, Wolverine, Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian and Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs are the pics it's most likely to promote.
Disney is remaining tight-lipped about its Super Bowl strategy, but it wouldn't be surprising if it buys time for Dwayne Johnson starrer Race to Witch Mountain and Jerry Bruckheimer’s G-Force.
Meanwhile, Warner Bros. hasn't bought a spot and may not at all, even with Terminator Salvation, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and Watchmen — pics that would all appeal to the Super Bowl crowd — on its upcoming release sked."

Stay tuned for more …' His 'little friend' is a small hidden camera and it looks like he's talking about GHOSTBUSTERS 3. His call sign is 'ectospy' and he has two different videos uploaded that show a set in New York.
One with a New York cab being smashed (it also has a 555 number on the side) and another video of a strange creature walking the street, he seems to be made out of random objects like a bike and such, his name on the image is 'GARBAGE GHOST' - computer images of the creature are also included."

THR says that Rourke would play a tattooed Russian heavy named Ivan who becomes a man with deadly, technologically enhanced coils. Variety adds that Rourke would play the Crimson Dynamo. "He's considered to be an evil version of Iron Man because he battles the superhero in a nuclear-powered suit of armor," says the trade.
Rockwell would play Justin Hammer, a multibillionaire businessman and a rival of industrialist Tony Stark, AKA Iron Man, being played by a returning Robert Downey Jr.
Rourke and Rockwell would be joining a cast that also includes the returning Gwyneth Paltrow and Don Cheadle, who is replacing Terrence Howard. Another part -- one for Stark's assistant Natasha -- is still open.
The project is eyeing a spring start in Manhattan Beach. Paramount will release the movie May 7, 2010"

7 in Running for 2008 Visual Effects Oscar
"The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced that seven films remain in the running in the Visual Effects category for the 81st Academy Awards®. The films are listed below in alphabetical order:

"Ain't It Cool News has received word that Simon Pegg and Nick Frost (the Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz duo) have landed the roles of Thomson and Thompson in director Steven Spielberg and producer Peter Jackson's Tintin. The movie will be animated with motion-capture technology and star Andy Serkis as Tintin's friend Captain Haddock. Thomas Sangster was previously set to play Tintin but had to drop out because of scheduling conflicts. A new Tintin has not been announced. DreamWorks' first 'Tintin' feature, targeted for a 2010 release, will be based on two of the books, 'The Secret of the Unicorn' and 'Red Rackham's Treasure,' written by Tintin creator Herge between 1942 and 1944. The second film will be directed by Jackson."
Now, I haven't seen Shaun of the Dead or Hot Fuzz. However, I did see Simon Pegg in a few scenes in Mission: Impossible III and look forward to seeing him as Montgomery Scott in Star Trek this May. Him, Frost and Spielberg are sure to be a winning combination.

"They're going to build a huge amount of the set. The director, Joe Kosinski, has made some unbelievable commercials. People can check out his Web site. He's just a really talented guy. And he's a really big fan of using as much sets as you can, because he's an architect as well, so he likes to build these worlds. And with something like Tron, I think it helps to create the environment as much as possible without too much green screen so that these characters can exist within this world, ... with the feel ... as real as possible."
